Many people have difficulties in understanding the language of the 17th century. It’s not only about “thou” and “thee”, but also meaning of words changed over the years. Some things had a different meaning because of the cultural context of 1611 compared to today.

This section of the project collects the topics concerning the language used in the KJV 1611 that explain there meaning in a way we can understand today. Not to change the text, but to build a foundation that helps the translators to transport this meaning to their language and cultural context.

The challenge will be to not only understand and transport the English of 1611 alone. The 47 translators of the KJV tried to be as close to the scriptures as possible at the same time. So even in 1611 there have been difficulties already to just transport the meaning of e.g. the Greek to the KJV. So they had to add footnotes to explain what they did and why, so we need to translate them too, while preserving their meaning well.

In diesem Abschnitt des Projekts werden die Themen gesammelt, die sich auf die im KJV 1611 verwendete Sprache beziehen und deren Bedeutung auf eine Weise erklären, die wir heute verstehen können. Nicht um den Text zu ändern, sondern um eine Grundlage zu schaffen, die den Übersetzern hilft, diese Bedeutung in ihren sprachlichen und kulturellen Kontext zu übertragen.

Die Herausforderung wird darin bestehen, nicht nur das Englisch von 1611 allein zu verstehen und zu transportieren. Die 47 Übersetzer des KJV versuchten damals so nah wie möglich an den heiligen Schriften zu sein. Selbst im Jahr 1611 gab es bereits Schwierigkeiten, z.B. schon die Bedeutung des Griechischen in die KJV zu transportieren. Also mussten sie Fußnoten hinzufügen, um zu erklären, was sie getan haben und warum, also müssen wir sie ebefalls übersetzen und dabei ihre Bedeutung gut bewahren.
